Groupon in Australia warned over email spam by Australian regulator

Group-buying site Groupon has been formally warned by the Australian consumer regulator (ACMA) for bombarding consumers with daily email newsletters without adequate consent.

Groupon was issued with the warning because of its practice of signing customers to multiple newsletters, but only offering the chance to unsubscribe one by one.

“Complaints to the ACMA indicated that individuals who attempted to unsubscribe from the newsletters were only unsubscribed from one of them, and continued to receive other Groupon newsletters regularly every day or week,” the Authority's notice about the warning says.

Spreets - first major Australian daily deal site to drop out of group buying market

Daily Deals site Spreets in Australia this week let their subscribers know that it is moving to a new business model which effectively sees it leave the group buying market. The move – which sees the Seven West Media-affiliated Spreets the first major casualty of the brutal group buying war, comes just two years after Yahoo!7 bought it for $40m.

Instead, Spreets will become a list broker or rather a large glorified daily deal aggregator by emailing consumers on its database with offers from elsewhere. The customers will deal directly with those businesses. Customers who have bought Spreets credits have just two weeks to spend them. The move does not come as a major surprise as it was reported before Christmas that Spreets had made most of its staff redundant as the group buying space consolidated.

Daily deal sites in Australia generate half a billion in 2012

According to the latest rearch report published today by Telsyte, Australian consumers spent more than half a billion dollars on daily deal websites in 2012 despite significant slowdowns. The top five group buying sites in Australia are Groupon, Scoopon, LivingSocial, Cudo and OurDeal. Their combined revenues were $504 million for 2012 - an increase of 1.4 per cent on 2011.

Daily Deal websites offer significant discounts on everything from cotton bed-sheets to luxury holidays and restaurant meals. These deals typically don't "activate" until a minimum number of users take part, which allows for large-volume discounts. The amount spent was much lower than Telsyte had previously forecast.

Where the company had once predicted the industry would hit revenues of over $600 million, it downgraded expectations to $530 million in late 2012.
